There are 53 boys and girls living in this dormitory. The children are all 12 to 20 years old. Most of the children are from Taung Goo District of Karen State in Burma.
Human Rights groups working in this area have documented high rates of civilian abuse at the hands of the military regime. As a result, many villagers from this area have been reduced to near poverty, and many schools have been destroyed along with villages and agricultural fields.
The dormitory is managed by an organization called the Karen Women’s Organization (KWO). The KWO manages seven out of the 12 dormitories currently established in Mae Ra Ma Luang camp. As a local organization and with so many responsibilities, the KWO struggles to find enough support to ensure an adequate standard of living for the children and youth in their care. Dormitory G has a full-time carer who lives with the children and directly oversees their well being. In addition, a committee of community members monitors the dormitory and ensures the welfare of the children.
