Section 13 Dormitory, Umphium Mai Camp

Section 13 Dormitory

There are 27 male students in this dormitory between the ages of 14 and 19. Almost all of the boys come from an area inside Karen State where people have become largely displaced. The military regime has forcibly relocated many villages and destroyed many more.

All the boys at the dorm have expressed a deep commitment to education. All of them would eventually like to return to their families and bring with them what they have learned, to help the children who remained behind and to pass along the education they gained while living in the refugee camp.

The Section 13 Boarding House came to the attention of the Room to Grow Foundation when it burned down in 2004. The boys were left with no place to live and no blankets. Still, they got up every morning and went to school.

The dormitory is managed by a husband, Mahn Than Hla, and his wife, Mu Lar Hway. Mahn Than Hla is a well respected member of the community leader and he and his wife do their best for the children under their care.
